I wanted to provide you an update regarding Shoplifting, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. To counter shoplifting in the Bethnal Green area we have introduced to various local stores a method of DNA property marking using SelectaDNA liquid as part of Operation Zoridon which can be linked back to the specific store since the DNA is unique to that establishment.
When officers catch prolific shoplifters and they have stolen goods on them we are able to check the items with a UV light and see which store the item belongs to and then we are able to return them. This initiative will help increase chances of successfully identifying stolen property and reducing loss for these businesses.
Officers from the Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) were deployed to specific locations where businesses had experienced high levels of shoplifting. As part of this operation, stores were introduced to ‘SelectaDNA’ marking kit designed to mark products and assist in the identification of stolen goods and prolific offenders.
Officers explained the purpose of the initiative to business owners and staff and provided a demonstration on how to correctly use the marking kits.
This intelligence report has been created to support future investigations should these premises experience further incidents of shoplifting. The presence of marked property may assist in linking suspects to theft offences and strengthening evidential opportunities.
Officers are encouraged to consider this initiative when dealing with theft-related offences at participating stores, as it may support offender identification and crime reduction.
Participating businesses have been provided with the necessary equipment and safety guidance and have also provided with contact details should they require SNT to intervene.
Shoplifting is a crime that can have a substantial negative impact on local businesses across London. If you notice anything suspicious or witness anyone shoplifting, please report it as soon as possible. These reports are invaluable in letting us build a picture of when and where shop lifters operate, meaning we can be in the right place at the right time to arrest those responsible. For more guidance, see our page on how to spot a shoplifter. We are working on our brand-new strategy for how we police London and we want your help. Our New Met for London: Phase 2 strategy will guide how we deliver on behalf of Londoners over the next three years. |
